The
computer and technology programs are designed to help children
and youth develop to their full potential by increasing technology
literacy and skills, strengthen their homework ability, increase
participation in youth sponsorship opportunities and to learn
how to use the Internet in a positive manner. Specific
program learning objectives are targeted through the use of
appropriate software and web exploration. During the school
year, children can use the lab to do research on the Internet,
type school papers, or run educational programs Monday through
Friday between 2:30 and 6:00 p.m. A technology lab instructor
and/or trained staff is designated to coordinate and facilitate
the operations of the youth technology lab (YTL).
The
Youth Technology Laboratory can be used by all members of
the Fort Myer Military Community as well as outside individuals
and groups. Use of the lab must be coordinated with CYS management
and the lab instructor. YS and SAS activities have
priority during program hours of operation. All CYS
YTL rules must be followed by patrons using the lab.
If youth are going to use the INTERNET they must complete
the CYS-YTL Permission Card. Additionally, CYS employees
can use the lab for planning, activity exploration and training.
The
Homework Center is open daily for the Power Hour program.
Power Hour is a facilitated educational learning activity
program, where students can get help with their homework,
read and write, or use computers. Every week there is a different
theme for the Power Hour as well as a weekly challenge, and
daily educational websites. Teen Hour is from 2:45-4:00pm
and is available for all students in Middle and High School.
SAS Power Hour is run from 4:00-6:00pm and is open for all
eligible school-age children. There is a prize
incentive for students participating in the Power Hour program.
This year Power Hour will be focusing on US History. The month
of September will be focusing on the pre-constitution era.
Tuesday from 5:00-5:30pm will be a mentoring program for 1
st grade through 5 th grade and from 3:30-4:00pm for Middle
School and High School Students. On Wednesday afternoons
from 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm there will be a drama club offered
to both YS and SAS children. Fridays from 4:00-5:00pm will
be reading hour. This will support our Reach for the World
reading incentive program, and pre-readers will have the opportunity
to have stories read to them, and facilitate their reading
skills.
Eligibility
for use of all CYS programs will be based on criteria outlined
in AR215-1.
