Parenting Information
Parenting in today’s society is more challenging than ever, but there are many more resources available to families than ever before. Family advocacy has answers, resources and services available to assist all clients from the new parent to the seasoned parent with teenagers, to grandparents raising grandchildren, single parents, blended families, and more. All classes are free, so why not take advantage of them today. All enrichment classes have a minimum number of participants required to conduct the class, therefore pre-registration is required for all classes no later than 3 business days prior to class date.
Developmental Play
This weekly playgroup is designed for children ages 1-5, focusing on cognitive, physical and social skills through play, and crafts. This structured setting also helps children develop parent-child bonding and prepare for kindergarten. The group meets Wednesday’s from 10:00 to noon. Budgeting for Baby & Baby Bundles This class is offered jointly through the Financial Assistance and Family Advocacy programs. Expectant parents will learn about costs involved in raising a child today, how to budget for today and your child’s future education, what to expect developmentally from your baby, and how to keep your baby safe. Thanks to Army Officer’s Wives Club of the Greater Washington Area, AAFES, ACS Volunteers, and the Family Advocacy program a layette basket full of infant necessities are provided free to participants. S.O.L.V.E.
This program is a unique problem solving tool for your unique toddler. The 3 week series will focus on a 5 step program designed to help solve problem behaviors, win children’s cooperation, and build self esteem in your child. Active Parenting Now
This 6 week program for parents of children ages 5-12 helps teach you how to be an “active” parent, teach responsibility, improve communication, diffuse power struggles and cope with difficult topics. Active Parenting of Teens
This 6 week program helps parents meet today’s tough challenges of parenting teens. It is designed to enhance the skills parents need to communicate effectively with their teens, encourage better behavior, use positive discipline techniques, teach responsibility and address sensitive issues such as drugs, sexuality, and violence. Active Parenting Online
This option for parenting classes provides the maximum amount of convenience for today’s busy parents. The course is 6 weeks in length. Focusing on 1 chapter each week, you can read, go online and participate at your convenience (with the exception of the live online chat that is pre-scheduled). Parenting With Cooperation: For Separated & Divorced Parents
This class comes from the program “Cooperative Parenting and Divorce”. It provides participants an opportunity to review their commitment in ensuring a “child-focused” environment in which to raise their children. The session will focus on communication and negotiation skills through group interaction, and will highlight the importance of maintaining a positive parental relationship in spite of the difficult issues associated with separation & divorce. Very Informed Parent Program (VIP)
This is an incentive program that rewards parents for taking the time to become their best. Education is a powerful thing. Attend a variety of classes identified by the Family Advocacy Program and earn points. Points vary according to course content and length. Once a parent accumulates 5 points they can enroll in VIP for one year. Parents receive incentives and attend special events. Challenge yourself as a parent and join VIP. Couples Communication
Communication is an important part of building and maintaining positive relationships. Enrichment classes designed to enhance your skills in communication are offered quarterly and include:
What Planet Is Your Spouse From?
This class on communication is offered to all couples married or unmarried. Participants will begin by taking the Myers Briggs Personality Type Inventory. During the course students will learn their personality types, what they mean and how they may affect their relationships with others. We must have a minimum of 3 couples for this class. You 2
This class focuses on the importance of effective communication, respecting your partner, accepting difference, and building a relationship that is valued by both. Know What Series
Children meet monthly at the Youth Services After School Program with the Family Advocacy program educator and discuss a variety of topics and complete an accompanying short workbook. Staying Home Alone: Are You Ready?
This curriculum is from Virginia Cooperative Extension and covers what to do in an emergency, preparing safe and healthy snacks, following the rules, basic first aide, fire and stranger safety. For more information, dates, and general or disabled accessibility, call (703) 696-3512.
Kids On The Block The Kids on the Block, created in 1977, features life size puppets who use the magic of a live puppet theatre to teach children and adults. Each year in April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Month of The Military Child, this program is held on Fort Myer. The program content is appropriate for 1st-5th graders. Topics include:

Staying Home Alone: Is Your Child Ready?
This class will help you determine whether or not your child is ready to stay home alone unsupervised. County and post guidelines are discussed along with effective communication between you and your child, how to develop a safety plan/checklist with your child, and emergency procedures. All enrichment classes have a minimum number of participants required to conduct the class; therefore preregistration is required for all classes no later than three business days prior to class date.
